As a cinematographer I have discovered that I was unwilling to violate the conventions for shot composition. My main motivation is to visually convey a story through camera and lighting, and my fearfulness of experimental cinematography inhibited me from telling a complete story. I overcame this fear and utilized the experimentation to help me reach my full potential.
I believe my biggest strength as a cinematographer is the planning tools that I employ for every shoot I am a part of. A long time ago I learned on my own that most mistakes can be avoided by making decisions several weeks prior, and this realization has dramatically improved set efficiency, while still capturing an image I am proud of.
Most of the things that I learned in university were through trial and error. I discovered that the errors I made throughout all my classes has shaped me into becoming a better cinematographer than I was prior.
My major provides the opportunity to get experience through my own experiments. That experience could provide the opportunities for a job in the film advertisement industry, or a role on a large film set. From there I can work to become a cinematographer for feature length films, fulfilling my career goals.
