DESCRIPTION: Mock intro for my tv series pitch “The Galactic Games” (yes, it’s based off of one of my scripts!) I first found a bunch of space and landscape footage that related to the story (and that I liked), then collected green screen images of people and a few of horses. I used luma key compositing to set my characters into their desert backgrounds and used the alpha matte function to turn the characters into their respective landscapes. Each landscape represents their home planet. I pulled footage from Star Wars movies (and the Mandalorian) to represent the story’s galactic war, and almost every image, except those of the characters, are super imposed over another. I would like to say that I did the score myself, but I was able to pull it in thanks to Filmstro (you can get royalty-free music there). Fun fact: the actors’ names are obviously all made up, but they’re a play off of my characters’ names in “The Magic Within.”

DESCRIPTION: An edit about the process of glassblowing. I remember editing this in just about the same way as I edited the Farm to Table assignment. I read through the text interviews first with ScriptSync then picked out the moments that resonated the most with me and spliced them into the timeline. I went through the b-roll and purposefully placed each shot at points that seemed to make the most sense so that they would reference what was being talked about. This assignment also taught us how to key out a green screen and replace the background, as seen with the narrator at the beginning.

TITLE: Farm to Table
YOUR ROLE: Editor

DURATION: 5’22”
CLASS: FMX 343 Advanced Post-Production
PROFESSOR: Dana Plays
SEMESTER / TERM: SP 21
INSTITUTION: The University of Tampa
DESCRIPTION: An edit about organic farming in California. One of the goals of this assignment was to create a radio edit with all of the given interviews and then insert b-roll to give those interviews a new meaning. This is exactly what I did; I tried to use all of the interviews that we were given to make a more complete story, and cut them in a way that would make them all relevant to each other and kind of backflip off of what the previous or next interview was discussing. I added in the b-roll afterwards and tried to pick images that I thought would be the most meaningful and give the documentary more depth. I honestly could have edited a much longer version of this – I loved the story that was there!

DESCRIPTION: A montage/narrative edit consisting of flashbacks and different effects such as superimposition. The key with this exercise was to begin to learn how to use certain effects in Avid Media Composer such as a dip to color effect or adding a film grain onto a certain shot. I had actually wanted to use the film grain effect for the flashback sequence, but for whatever reason Media Composer wouldn’t let me, so I opted to mess with the color of the shots instead to give them an old-timey, but off look.

CLASS: FMX 343 Advanced Post-Production

DESCRIPTION: An edit with a voiceover matched to b-roll. I really tried to line up the b-roll so that it referenced (directly or metaphorically) what the voiceover was saying. I specifically placed things in the timeline at just the right points…only to realize that I had used all the footage and that there were major gaps in the timeline where the voiceover would’ve been talking over black. So, I had to go back and try to rearrange everything to fill in the holes and came up with the final edit above. It doesn’t match as well I wanted to, but it’s still fairly close to what I originally had in mind.

DESCRIPTION: An edit about the fear of the dentist. This was my first edit using Avid Media Composer, and let me say, it was a little wild trying to figure the software out at first. It was similar to Premiere but also so foreign at the same time. It was slightly annoying because I remember it crashing once or twice as well and I couldn’t figure out why. I worked off of a hard drive for all of these assignments, so I knew space wasn’t an issue. I guess all that matters is that I was able to finish the assignment and that I never lost any progress.

TITLE: Poker Game
YOUR ROLE: Editor
MEDIA: Video
SOFTWARE: Adobe Premiere Pro
SPECIFICATIONS: 1920x1080px, 24fps
DURATION: 1’32”
CLASS: FMX 343 Advanced Post-Production
PROFESSOR: Dana Plays
SEMESTER / TERM: SP 21
INSTITUTION: The University of Tampa
DESCRIPTION: A match-on-action edit about a game of poker. We were required to use the shots in a way that would make the game feel heated and as if everything was on the line. We also had to incorporate the use of a speech bubble for a few of the characters to show what they were thinking at a certain point in time, which added a little bit of comedy (but not too much!) to the scene.

TITLE: Why Shadows?
YOUR ROLE: Editor
MEDIA: Video
SOFTWARE: Adobe Premiere Pro
SPECIFICATIONS: 1920x1080px, 24fps
DURATION: 0’54”
CLASS: FMX 343 Advanced Post-Production
PROFESSOR: Dana Plays
SEMESTER / TERM: SP 21
INSTITUTION: The University of Tampa
DESCRIPTION: My first multi-cam edit in Premiere. Since we were able to cut the footage how we wanted, I prioritized cutting around the action to see if I could make it feel more intense. Since I had never used the multi-cam function in Premiere, this was a very helpful exercise.

TITLE: Tanzania
YOUR ROLE: Editor
MEDIA: Video
SOFTWARE: Adobe Premiere Pro
SPECIFICATIONS: 1920x1080px, 24fps
DURATION: 0’31”
CLASS: FMX 343 Advanced Post-Production
PROFESSOR: Dana Plays
SEMESTER / TERM: SP 21
INSTITUTION: The University of Tampa
DESCRIPTION: A short edit about Tanzania with music. This was our first assignment in the class. Since I have a musical ear (I come from an orchestra background) I tried to cut the footage to the music once I noticed that the song was counting in four. It didn’t turn out super perfectly since some of the shots had lengths that were hard to work with, and I had to figure out how to use every shot per the criteria of the assignment.
