TITLE: Boys Will be Boys: An Analysis of the Portrayal of Masculinity in Film
MEDIA: Research Paper
PAGES: 15
CLASS: COM 260 American Cinema
PROFESSOR: Lowell Harris
TERM: Fall 2020
INSTITUTION: University of Tampa
DESCRIPTION: For this research paper we were allowed to choose any topic that we wanted, as long as it pertained to American cinema. For my paper, I discussed the portrayal of masculinity in film through the examples of the films Taxi Driver (1976), The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), and The Godfather (1971). Movies often portray the idea that men must be masculine, however I wanted to know what it meant to have masculinity and if there are different ways to show it. This paper also examined how these different movies portray the idea of the characters’ masculinity and the effects it had on the movies as a whole.

DESCRIPTION: After watching a couple American films, we had to choose one and write an essay on a topic within the film. I chose the film Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1966) and covered the topic of Martha and George’s alleged son. My analysis of the situation was that since they were unable to have kids, Martha and George created the illusion of a “son” to cope with the fact that they couldn’t have actual children.
