In this assignment we were to make an observational documentary. I chose to make it about my friend and her experience at the Okeechobee music festival. Seeing this assignment was assigned over spring break and we have never been to the music festival before, I figured it was an interesting subject to do my assignment on. Because it was a music festival, I decided that using my iPhone would be the best option because I didn’t have to worry about a camera getting lost or worry about security and enjoy the scenery around us.

For this project we were told to focus on the interview aspect of documentaries. I decided to interview two people I know who are in the music program and have them explain why and how they decided to be music majors. After the interview I had them play around on the instruments and their music editing software to show the audience how fun and exciting music can be.

This was our first documentary project and because it was our first, our professor wanted to see where everyone’s starting points were when it comes to documentary filmmaking. For this group project I was with David Thornton and Allan Lunt and we decided that it would be perfect to do a documentary on Gasparilla seeing it was that weekend. We interviewed three people who all have had different Gasparilla experiences in the past. Because it was our first project we were given permission to use our phones. However this was a critical learning moment because I unfortunately learned the hard way that iPhones over expose the footage when it is transferred to a computer as seen in much of the B-roll.
