Throughout my life I’ve explored various avenues of creative expression until finally switching from canvas to a camera. I initially applied to college as a communications major because it was a “safe route”, however I wanted to be in a degree that allowed me to have creative expression and be surrounded by other passionate people. Film has allowed me to develop a unique artistic voice, having the ability to capture scenes and environments in a light that will spark emotions and thoughts in viewers. In my pursuit of this degree, I have discovered that documentary filmmaking serves as the very driving force behind my voice.
Reflecting on my education’s impact on my current standing, I realize that many, if not all, professors have played a crucial role in shaping my abilities. In my documentary class led by Professor Walker I acquired valuable skills in conducting interviews, posing thought-provoking questions, and drawing out engaging responses from my interviewees. His class further sparked my passion for documentary filmmaking. In Cinematography with Warren Cockerham, I learned essential technical aspects, such as building and rigging various setups, like video village for focus pulling, the Red camera, and lighting. Likewise, my experimental class taught me the fundamentals of camera work while enjoying learning about discontinuity and multi-layered editing techniques to create more symbolic pieces. Although I already had a fondness for editing from high school, this experimental class elevated my skills in areas like double exposure effects. The experimental film I produced in this class allowed me to reconnect with my artistic roots in painting and photography by focusing on nature’s nuances, intricate details, and the concept of the sublime to elicit profound emotions.
My strengths lie in my drive, discipline, perfectionism, and curiosity. Despite being a naturally disorderly person, I create systems for myself to maintain order and reach my goals, both in my personal life and in film productions. This helps me work more efficiently and stay motivated through my tasks. By bringing emotional awareness to interviews and productions, I have been able to collaborate and thrive in the high-stress environment that is a film set. As an introspective individual, I enjoy thoughtful conversations, research, and exploring a wide range of topics. My participation in a National Geographic expedition in January 2023 further fueled my passion for collaboration between artists and scientists in understanding diverse subjects, from environmental concerns to ecosystems, and the experience has further fueled my passion for documentary.
On the other side, my struggle to maintain a healthy balance between self-care, discipline, and my meticulous nature is a weakness of mine. I tend to burn myself out due to high self-imposed standards and often struggle with managing my energy. This is an issue that i’m still working on, by setting more realistic goals and prioritizing and delegating tasks. My other weakness, which is in acquiring and retaining technical skills, is something I have been able to address. To overcome this, I have been doing more hands-on work, shadowing industry sets, and progressively taking on roles such as PA, 2nd & 1st AC, and camera operator.
After graduation, I see myself initially freelancing to gain experience and broaden my skillset, particularly in the technological aspects of film. Alternatively, I’d like to pursue a stable position within a company that offers more consistent work. My goal is to expand my professional network and enhance my portfolio before submitting it for review at companies like National Geographic, Vice News, and Discovery Channel for a contract. My ultimate dream is to travel for work while investigating intriguing questions about our different societies and the environment.
