DESCRIPTION: This documentary explores the published research of UT history Professor Patrick O’Brien. Professor O’Brien investigated and researched the impact the Revolutionary Era had on British Loyalist Women. Professor O’Brien followed the Robie Family and specifically the Robie Sisters during their exile to Halifax, Nova Scotia. I felt the documentary was important to do because it highlighted the impact on women during the revolutionary era which is not covered in our history books. I wanted to showcase the human aspect of war. I used the Interview style where I filmed Professor O’Brien narrating by setting the stage (explain current events and state of the colonies) and elaborating on Mary Robie’s diary. Within the narration and interview, I incorporated B-Roll footage of Mary Robie’s diary. During the B-Roll, I added voice-over. I enjoyed creating this documentary because I have a passion for history and filmmaking. I was inspired by Professor O’Brien’s published articles and research while taking his U.S. History class. The biggest benefit I gained during the project was learning how to conduct interviews for documentary filmmaking.

DESCRIPTION: This documentary is an interview with fellow classmate, Lance Nelson where she explains how she practices witchcraft. For my last documentary film assignment, I needed to create an Interview documentary. I chose to interview Lance because she is a good friend and I was intrigued by her witchcraft hobby. I filmed the interview documentary in her apartment. I setup and positioned the camera so that her altar was in the background. The altar is an important aspect to witchcraft. The documentary interview was an interactive interview. Lance would explain an aspect of witchcraft and then I would ask follow up questions. I felt the interactive interview worked very well and came across as natural and not rehearsed. Within the interview, I included B-roll footage of her altar. I enjoyed creating this documentary because I liked learning about Lance’s witchcraft hobby. I learned how to conduct an interview with a subject for documentary filmmaking and the project helped me prepare for my final documentary film project.

DESCRIPTION: For my second assignment, I needed to create an observation documentary. I chose to observe the various birds on the Tampa River Walk. I wanted to observe nature because it would be random and interesting. On a sunny day in October, I randomly walked around the Tampa River Walk with a Black Magic 4k camera with a 55mm lens looking to observe the different birds found near the river and interacting with their environment. The only sound in the documentary is the non-diegetic sound of birds singing and chirping. I felt the non-diegetic sound complimented the observation documentary. I found the final film to be peaceful and relaxing. Filming nature proved to be a bit challenging because they don’t sit still for long; especially birds. I walked around for 45 minutes and filmed different birds I encountered. I found editing to be easy and quick. I appreciated the project and enjoyed making an observational documentary because it was less formal and more random. I learned observation is “you” observe something which I found interesting and fun.

DESCRIPTION:  Our first assignment for Documentary Production required us to create a quick micro-documentary. For my micro-doc, I chose to interview one of my roommates about his morning routine. I felt interviewing my roommate would be interesting and help me learn more about my new roommate. I shot this micro-doc using my iPhone 15. First I interviewed my roommate asking him questions about his morning routine and then I included B-roll footage of him brushing his teeth and making breakfast. I chose to include myself asking the questions off camera to help frame the documentary as an interview and make it more of a natural conversation. The project helped me gain confidence in asking questions for an interview documentary. I learned when using your iPhone to film, that you should film using landscape instead of portrait.

DESCRIPTION: As a Freshman, the second film I created was my Dada documentary. I interviewed Professor Timothy Ridlen, my Media Arts professor, on his knowledge of the Dada art movement. I chose Dada as the subject for my documentary because I found the Dada art movement very interesting and I wanted to showcase the interesting aspects about the Dada art movement. I set up the Black Magic 4K camera and Z6 zoom recorder outside Professor Ridlen’s office building. I chose a picnic table outside because I wanted to include diegetic sound from the surroundings to emphasize the Dada theme. The wind distorted some sound clips which further accentuate the Dada theme. I filmed Professor Ridlen for an hour asking Professor Ridlen how and where Dada began and explain the major tenets of Dada. I experienced a technical difficulty where I lost my film footage. However, I had the entire interview recorded. To overcome my challenge, I collected Dada images and used the images as B-roll footage while Professor Ridlen spoke about Dada. I was pleased with the final film. I especially liked to hear the diegetic sound of the surroundings while Professor Ridlen talked about the Dada art movement. I felt the diegetic sound added to the creativity of the documentary and emphasized the Dada theme. The project introduced me to creating documentary films and helped me learn how to overcome technical challenges. The best part about the class was the hands-on experience with professional film equipment as a Freshman.
