DESCRIPTION: The music video for Jain’s ‘Makeba’ holds many, many examples of visual effects of various types, which is why one assignment we were given was to pick three and replace them with effects of our own. For my approach, I decided to go with a ‘space’ theme after finding an abundance of stock footage of NASA shuttles taking off and landing, which would suit the clips I was going to be replacing. For the opening clip, I used a mask to cut into the footage when Jain collapses the sheet of paper the footage is ‘on’, following the general shape and corners of the paper as it is crushed. I also added a blur effect to suggest motion, like the footage is moving with the paper instead of being plastered on while it is crushed. For the other clips involving the stereo system’s buttons being adjusted, the replacement of the original footage with my own was similarly done with masks, with my footage being either sped up, slowed down or even reversed depending on what it was I was editing in.
