Growing up in a 3rd world country comes with many harsh realities. Limited career options, lack of proper education and a workforce that seems entirely reliant knowing the owner personally and other nepotist traits are what one is met with in Trinidad and many other countries of this status around the globe. As a child I always used to try my hand at drawing and arts and crafts because I found it was the only way for me to express myself in a genuine way. When the time came for me to choose what I wanted to do, my parents were probably shocked that it was something so different from their own careers but they supported me all the same. I began looking at schools abroad as the presence of what I would consider modern education was not present when looking at schools focused on the arts. Thankfully I was able to secure a spot in what seemed to be exactly what I was looking for in a career path.

The classes I’ve taken at the University of Tampa for my Animation major so far have completely changed my outlook on the world and art as I know it. Each new professor and class presented me with a different perspective to view things from and allowed me to rethink what was even possible to begin with. Early on in Marcio Goncalves’ classes for 3D, I realized this was my element immediately. Being able to learn the basics from him really allowed me to become confident in my 3D Modeling and animation skills. Other classes like Digital Illustration with Marie Dorsey and Dana Corrigan’s 2D animation classes showed me how to effectively and efficiently hone in on my drawing, organizational and compositing ability. Now that I’ve had a chance to see the majority of my degree through, it’s clear that my time at U.T. has exposed me to many different disciplines within animation and those that are related to it. I think that this will help me greatly by being able to “speak their language” when I inevitably have to collaborate with other creatives in different areas like web design, video game development and film/TV production.

Since starting my junior year, I took a leap of faith and created an instagram account to share my creative work no matter if it was a drawing, animation, photography or videography, just so that I could start getting used to creating art across digital mediums and to see what other art was in and around the world. To my surprise, people seem to really like the things I can produce and began following the page. It is taking some time but the follower count on there seems to be increasing steadily as I continuously improve upon the quality of my work and relevance of the content. This proved to me that I was not wrong, that animation can be more than simply “drawing cartoons” or making shows for “kids”. To me this is an area of unlimited possibilities as the only thing holding one back, is one’s own ability to envision that event/thing for themselves. The combined result of all that I have and will learn at U.T. as well as my own developed influences, equip me with the invaluable ability to bring potentially anything to life through 2D/ 3D animation, illustration, photography, videography, creative coding and even graphic design. After graduating I hope secure a job in the field of animation, specifically in 3D, and perhaps start my own business in the future, specializing in multiple aspects of creating, offering both beautiful and functional artworks. One thing that I struggle with is not giving ideas a chance unless it appears to be directly beneficial to the cause in question, but through my gained knowledge and new perspectives at U.T. and my own personal motivations and drive for success, I hope to overcome this and unlock another level of creative ability for myself.
