DESCRIPTION: This is an illustration of a character I created for my friend’s Dungeons and Dragons campaign. For this work I wanted to see what I could do without outlining the illustration in black like I usually do, and just work with the colors. I used a lot of separate layers as well as the blending/blur tool, airbrushes, pens, and different blending modes of the layers like Soft Light. I think that the use of just the colors and blending instead of using black outlines makes the character’s hair look softer and like it has more texture. I also think that the lack of outlines creates a softer look for the entire illustration, which I really like.

DESCRIPTION: This is an illustration I created as a test for the design of my character, Tanya. I had an idea of what I wanted her to look like in my mind, so I wanted to create a quick illustration of her with all of the colors I had in mind so that I could get a visual of her out on a canvas. This way I could identify things that I liked and things that I disliked about her design and adjust her from there. I also drew her in an environment to get an idea of how she looked against an actual background. In her final, finished design

DESCRIPTION: This is a final character design for the main character of my 2D animated short film, Shelved. I wanted the style to resemble a sock puppet, but with the ability to play with the facial expression and body language. I chose this style because I wanted a character that not was not only flexible with expression, but would also be easy to re-draw over and over again for the purpose of a 2D animated film. I didn’t want an overcomplicated design that would make it difficult for me to work with relatively quickly.

DESCRIPTION: This is the final character design for the dust sprite character in my 2D animated short film Shelved. I wanted this character to be something small and cute that could fit behind any ordinary object on a shelf, but not something that exists in real life like a mouse or a rat. I came up with this character that resembles something like a dust ball that came to life. I wanted the character to have big, round eyes that hopefully made it cuter.

DESCRIPTION: These are the backgrounds that I used in my 2D animated short film Shelved. I did research on what typical studio apartments look like by going to several different apartments’ websites and looking at their available studios units. I wanted the colors to be bright and pairing with each other well, as well as matching the main character as she walks around. I also wanted to make sure that each background matched each other and that each one didn’t look like it came from somewhere completely different. I ended up with a lot of pinks and purples, as well as a cream color for the furniture.

DESCRIPTION: I drew this illustration as a personal drawing practice. This character is one that I created myself a long time ago, and is the main character that I draw when I am practicing—this makes her a symbol of my own journey through learning and improving my art skills. I created a sketch of all the base shapes with a purple pencil tool, then did a rough pass with a pen. I then used a mapping pen in black to outline the rough pass and add details.
