DESCRIPTION: This collage was my final project for Darkroom Photography. One thing I struggled with in that class was printing my pieces and so over the semester I accumulated many prints with less than optimal tonal range. I wanted to find a way to incorporate those pieces and so I decided to make a collage. The inspiration behind this piece was based on the fact that when trying to get justice for a crime committed, victims often get told by authority “do you really want to ruin their life by doing this?”, “they deserve a second chance”, or “you’re just causing drama” and there is little regard for how the perpetrators actions have already ruined or severely impacted the victims lives.
I sewed baby’s breath over the model’s mouth and eyes to represent how victims are often silenced. The crushed fruit represents innocence and femininity, and the harsh reality that 1 in 3 women globally experience violence. A part of womanhood is being sexualized and degraded–when I was a child I couldn’t wait to grow up and was incredibly blindsided to the darker side of growing up and becoming aware of the world around me.
