Above is the behind the scenes of the world, splines, and curves I used to animate the ship in Space Boy. Editing the footage shot at Vu was fairly simple and familiar to the traditional editing I’ve done before because the backgrounds were already integrated in the clips. The scenes with green screens were also fairly simple and I’ve composited other clips before. Of course I had to edit the clips with LUTs and basic color correction but the real challenge was animating the sequences in Unreal Engine. I took 2D animation so I knew timing and spacing, but this was my first time animating something in a 3D space.

For these scenes I attached my objects to a spline, set the start and end points, altered the x,y,z, and curves of the spline. After the objects were animated I attached a camera to the object and tracked it on some of the shots and on others I set a camera up on a spline and tracked it from a different angle. When it came to exporting the sequence in Unreal Engine, it wouldn’t come out right and I tried everything I could. Unfortunately I had to screen record the sequence but in the end I don’t think that it took too much away from the film. Once I had all my clips laid out it came down to refining the material, adding effects, sound, and blending the sequences in with the edit.
