DESCRIPTION: “Projection” is an experimental film that explores the duality of a person’s emotions when they are alone and when their everyday life is put on display. At the time of creating this, I was going through a pretty tough time and my mental health was the worst it’s ever been. I decided to turn this negative time into something productive and ended up with a project that means a lot to me. I really wanted this film to demonstrate what it’s like to live with mental illness and the duality between when you’re around others and when you’re alone. The audio at the end is a poem that I wrote about anxiety and depression and instead of just recording the audio and then reversing it, I actually recited the poem backwards and then reversed the audio. The result was still mostly garbles but if you listen carefully, you can catch a word or two.
TITLE: Like a Girl

MEDIA: Performance Art Video

DESCRIPTION: This performance art video includes an original spoken word poem that brings to light the fact that women are often brought down because of the way they look and act. Phrases like “you throw like a girl” or “you run like a girl” are often used in a negative context and promote the idea that the female gender is weak. I didn’t do much in terms of visuals for this piece because I really wanted the viewers to focus on the poem itself. In the end however, I decided to switch the color of the video from black and white to color to represent a shift in tone. The black and white portion focuses on the negative connotations of presenting as female, while the color portion of the piece is all about looking to the future and what we can do to shift the mindset that females are inherently weak.

DESCRIPTION: This experimental piece is a combination of three spoken word poems. The first poem is about life after high school and being able to find yourself in this new chapter in life. The second poem is about anxiety and depression and how it can affect our everyday lives. The third poem personifies “chaos” and how sometimes life can chaotic and there is nothing we can do about it.
