DESCRIPTION: A one-minute video art piece about body image. For this assignment we were given the prompt, “embrace the error” and I decided to focus my piece on body image and beauty standards. Being someone who has struggled and continues to struggle with body image issues, I wanted to push myself to create something that would be a little out of my comfort zone. I wanted to have a contrast between “ideal beauty standards” and someone who doesn’t necessarily fit those standards, ie. myself. To do this I had the background of the video be beauty magazine ads while I stood in front of them pointing out my flaws. The tape measure was significant in that it not only represented body proportions, but also the idea that trying to achieve these ideal proportions could feel suffocating and overwhelming. The tape over the mouth with the phrases, “fat ugly bitch” and “pretty for a fat girl” were there because those are thing that have been said to me over the years. I felt like those statements and many others silenced me in a way where I felt like I would never be attractive in anybodies eyes. Lastly, the “cutting” of my fat is a pretty visceral image but it’s one that I know resonates with many who feel like if they could just cut off that little bit of fat, they would be gorgeous. Standing in front of a camera and pointing out what could be considered “flaws” is not an ideal way to spend your time, however I have always had the mindset that if creating a piece of art with an important message makes you uncomfortable, then it’s something that needs to be said or portrayed because it’s not being talked about enough.
