Throughout the entire process of creating this film, pre-production was what I struggled with the most. The initial idea for this film actually came about the semester before I took the Senior Seminar class, so I had quite a bit of time to formulate this idea into an actual film. Since I have an affinity for experimental film, I really wanted to create a narrative that had experimental elements, while having a story and message with the ability to reach a more general audience. I landed on an experimental narrative with themes of spirituality, life and death, and childhood innocence.
I have always wanted to score a film and having a musical background, I decided that this was something I wanted to do for this film. I think there is something very powerful in telling a story through visuals instead of dialogue and I felt this film would benefit greatly from a specific score. After I had the script finished, I started to cast. Seeing as the two main characters were children I was a little nervous since it would be my first time working with children and there are very specific guidelines when working with child actors. However, I got lucky and two girls that I babysit were interested in acting and were the age that I had in mind for the characters. After casting the sisters, I thought that getting actors for the animals would be quite easy since there was no dialogue, but I had a very difficult time casting them. I reached out to several places with my casting call and either no one responded, or they didn’t fit the specifications for the character. Thankfully, a week before filming my brother and stepdad agreed to come down and help play the last two the roles I needed to fill.
