Rick and Morty – Illustration

CLASS: FMX 310 Creating Coding
PROFESSOR: Santiago Echeverry
SEMESTER / TERM: SP 18
INSTITUTION: University of Tampa

This was the first coding project we did for FMX 310. This project was all about the basics: quadratic and bezier curves, gradients, and lines. We were supposed to create any character we wanted, and I chose Rick and Morty from the TV cartoon Rick and Morty. This project took me well over 40 hours but it by far my favorite coding project I’ve done.

Fire & Ice – Vector Mandala

TITLE: Fire & Ice
MEDIA: Digital Illustration
SOFTWARE: Adobe Dreamweaver
SPECIFICATIONS: 800X800px, RGB
CLASS: FMX 310 Creating Coding
PROFESSOR: Santiago Echeverry
SEMESTER / TERM: SP 18
INSTITUTION: University of Tampa

This was the first mandala we got to do and focused on the foundations of how to make a mandala. it was really hard at first, getting down the specific functions like radius and translate, but once I got the hang of it, it was really fun to do. We used basic shapes and vectors in the mandala.  I love the color scheme in this and helped me realize broad html5 is. It set the foundation for the next few projects.

Moonshine – Illustrator Mandala

TITLE: Moonshine
MEDIA: Digital Illustration
SOFTWARE: Adobe Dreamweaver
SPECIFICATIONS: 800X800px, RGB
CLASS: FMX 310 Creating Coding
PROFESSOR: Santiago Echeverry
SEMESTER / TERM: SP 18
INSTITUTION: University of Tampa

This mandala was done when we found out we can import Illustrator files to Dreamweaver. I got to create these different shapes on Illustrator and turn them into a mandala. I have always loved the contrast between the sun and the moon and was glad that I got to incorporate that into this mandala.

What A Trip – Video Mandala

TITLE: What a Trip
MEDIA: Digital Illustration
SOFTWARE: Adobe Dreamweaver
SPECIFICATIONS: 800X800px, RGB
CLASS: FMX 310 Creating Coding
PROFESSOR: Santiago Echeverry
SEMESTER / TERM: SP 18
INSTITUTION: University of Tampa

This is one of my favorite mandalas that we did because I got to use videos. The videos I decide to use were from the music festival Okeechobee that I attended this spring break. This festival changed my life and I was so glad I got to incorporate it within my artwork. It was quite simple this time because I have known how to make a mandala for some time now and all I got to use were my own videos.

Leave’s Me Dizzy – Kinetic Poem

TITLE: Leave’s Me Dizzy
MEDIA: Digital Illustration
SOFTWARE: Adobe Dreamweaver
SPECIFICATIONS: 800X600px, RGB
CLASS: FMX 310 Creating Coding
PROFESSOR: Santiago Echeverry
SEMESTER / TERM: SP 18
INSTITUTION: University of Tampa

This coding project was really intense because we used a speech from a girl named Emma who survived the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting. This is when we learned how to use text within our code and was assigned to make a kinetic poem using this typography.

Mike Movement – Math Animation

TITLE: Mike Movement
MEDIA: Digital Illustration
SOFTWARE: Adobe Dreamweaver
SPECIFICATIONS: 800X800px, RGB
CLASS: FMX 310 Creating Coding
PROFESSOR: Santiago Echeverry
SEMESTER / TERM: SP 18
INSTITUTION: University of Tampa

This was probably the funniest project we did because we were learning about joint movements in code. I got to take a photo of myself and manipulate it to the point where it looked like my joints were moving. This was my least favorite project we did but I know that if I were to try this again I would have done it much cleaner.

Geo Frenzy – Sacred Geometry

TITLE: Geo Frenzy
MEDIA: Digital Illustration
SOFTWARE: Adobe Dreamweaver
SPECIFICATIONS: 800X800px, RGB
CLASS: FMX 310 Creating Coding
PROFESSOR: Santiago Echeverry
SEMESTER / TERM: SP 18
INSTITUTION: University of Tampa

This was one of the most difficult projects we learned because we were exploring the use of the sine and cosine functions to achieve eternal motion. It took me quite a while to understand the functions and how they work, but once I got the hang of it, it wasn’t too bad. I used inspiration from one of my favorite pieces of sacred geometry.

Harassment – Data Visualization

TITLE: Harassment
MEDIA: Digital Illustration
SOFTWARE: Adobe Dreamweaver
SPECIFICATIONS: 800X800px, RGB
CLASS: FMX 310 Creating Coding
PROFESSOR: Santiago Echeverry
SEMESTER / TERM: SP 18
INSTITUTION: University of Tampa

This is the second to last project we did for FMX 310. It was our job to gather data and represent it visually. I made a survey and sampled 20 guys I found on a gay dating app galled Grindr that asked them their sexual preference, level 1-7 of how much they’ve been harassed, where they are from, their age, their relationship status, etc. This project really opened my eyes more to the gay community and was a really different yet fun project that got me to realize how important data visualization can be.

This was our final project for FMX 310 and we were tasked to make a sort of video game. I decided to go with a little artist catching paint and avoiding peppers because I thought it was so cute. This was definitely not the easiest project and it took me a while to get the hang of it.
