DESCRIPTION: For our character modeling project, I chose to model an original character of mine that I was very familiar with. Taking a character that was designed with a 2D space in mind and putting it into a 3D environment was rather challenging, bolstered by the fact that my artstyle is very stylized and cartoony. As such, I had to make certain adaptations to the design, such as having the clothing sleeves be more form-fitting rather than excessively loose like they were in my model sheet. The hair was another interesting aspect; when I normally draw the hair, the ponytail and bangs have the same series of strands in location no matter what angle they’re viewed from, akin to how Mickey Mouse’s ears rotate position around his head to maintain silhouette. However, without the ability to maintain that illusion in 3D, I had to figure out how each part of hair would look from all directions. I’m very happy with the final result and it has given me a much deeper appreciation for 3D character modeling.

DESCRIPTION: Our first big project for the class was modeling and rendering an object of our choice. Up to this point, the models we had been making during the learning process were swords and shields; thus, for this assignment, I wanted to switch to a different kind of weapon. I chose a labrys-styled ax that I had pre-designed in the past. There were several challenges involved, such as figuring out the width of certain parts and determining what materials the markings on the ax should be textured with. Overall, however, I am very happy with how this came out.
