For my first coding project, I chose Arnold from Hey Arnold! because I missed all of the older shows from Nickelodeon, but also because I wanted to challenge myself by creating something/someone with many curves and edges. In the beginning, I attempted to understand the different types of lines and curves so I could make a smoother transition when I began the character. The hardest part was staying on track with the graph and coloring the image in. At a certain point, my image was a little bigger than the graph, so it was harder to figure out what points I needed. Adding color was difficult as well, due to certain shapes not entirely closing or the color not entirely filling a shape. After it’s all said and done, I’m proud of what I was able to create using HTML.

The Canvas project was the first coding project in my Creative Coding class. Since my first experience with coding was horrific, I was terrified of the nature of this course as well as the intensity that would ensue. This project was one of the most challenging yet rewarding projects that I have had in my college career. It taught me all the basic functions for creative code, and in the end, I thoroughly enjoyed the obstacles it made me overcome.

TITLE: Inside Her Mind – Vector Mandala
MEDIA: HTML
SOFTWARE: Adobe Dreamweaver
SPECIFICATIONS: 800px x 800px

The Vector mandala was the first of the four in our mandala series. The most challenging part of creating this piece was understanding the math behind the duplication of each shape. After that was sorted out, each piece of the mandala became easier to create.

TITLE: Many Media – Image Mandala

The Image mandala was exciting to create. I enjoyed using images rather than code to create the layers of the mandala. It was interesting to see the difference between using various media to create similar artwork in code because although the vector mandala and the image mandala are both structured the same way, the code behind them both has larger differences than expected.

TITLE: A Broken Home – Illustrator Mandala
MEDIA: HTML
SOFTWARE: Adobe Dreamweaver
SPECIFICATIONS: 800px x 800px

For the Illustrator mandala, I took the Vector Illustration I created of my sister and saved it in pieces to create each layer. I enjoyed this project mainly due to the explicit and implicit meaning of the title. The original image was of my sister holding an umbrella outside of our home, and it is now broken into multiple pieces for the mandala I created.

TITLE: Six Twenty-Six Sixteen – Video Mandala
MEDIA: HTML
SOFTWARE: Adobe Dreamweaver
SPECIFICATIONS: 800px x 800px
CLASS: ART 310 Creative Coding
PROFESSOR: Santiago Echeverry
SEMESTER / TERM: SP 18
INSTITUTION: University of Tampa

The Video mandala is my favorite of the four due to the meaning behind it. I took all the video that was filmed at my mother’s wedding to create this mandala and placed them into masks of the icons on her wedding schedule. Then I added her aisle song to accompany the piece, bringing it all together. The challenge with this mandala was keeping everything important within the mask of each object, but a lot of the changes turned into happy accidents in the end.

TITLE: Unknown Notions – Typography Project
MEDIA: HTML
SOFTWARE: Adobe Dreamweaver
SPECIFICATIONS: 800px x 600px

The Typography project was a harder project to create. Based off of Emma Gonzalez’s speech on gun violence, I created the shooter’s home. I used the words of her speech to emphasize what could be possibly going through the shooter’s head, whether it is their own thoughts or things that people have said about them. The difficulties of this project were that every object had to be created from text. Making sure that it all stayed within the confines of each mask was a difficult task to overcome.

TITLE: Another Dimension – Sacred Geometry Project
MEDIA: HTML
SOFTWARE: Adobe Dreamweaver
SPECIFICATIONS: 800px x 800px

This project was based on the use of math functions such as sine and cosine to create motion. After I chose this photo, I knew it would be a much more difficult challenge to animate certain aspects of the design. Although it was harder to decide what to leave stationery and what to animate, I am extremely pleased with the result.

TITLE: Theta Visualization – Data Visualization Project
MEDIA: HTML
SOFTWARE: Adobe Dreamweaver
SPECIFICATIONS: 800px x 800px
CLASS: ART 310 Creative Coding
PROFESSOR: Santiago Echeverry
SEMESTER / TERM: SP 18
INSTITUTION: University of Tampa

This project was interesting to create. I wanted to choose data that had meaning to me, so I based it off of 21 of the girls in my sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta. The kite is our badge, and holds a large amount of significance to us. The other factors include:
MouseX Intensity = Class
Height of the Kite = Years Spent in Theta
Kite with a Bow = Previously been a Rho Gamma
Stroke Color of the Kite = Faith:Pink, Hope:Purple, Love:Red
The Center Stripe = Preference of Black or Gold
Kite String Size = Pledge Class
The hardest part of this project was figuring out how to symbolize each trait within the kite. Overall, I am happy about the project and the way it portrays the ladies in Eta Tau.

TITLE: Sledding Expedition – Game
MEDIA: HTML
SOFTWARE: Adobe Dreamweaver
SPECIFICATIONS: 800px x 600px

SEMESTER / TERM: SP 18

The final project in my Creative Coding class was creating a game. Based off of my chilly home state, Minnesota, I decided to create a sledding game. I enjoyed creating all the graphics using Illustrator and all the sound effects for the game. The most challenging part of the code was understanding how Javascript files are incorporated as well as the way the code should be formatted within each file. It was a very difficult project to create, but as soon as the objects began to move and make sense, the difficulty eased little by little.
